Products We Use

We are frequently asked about what products we use. Here are some Amazon affiliate links to the things that your cats have been raised with. By no means do you need all of these items. But we have added a brief discussion of each item which will give you a better idea of why we use them and how they may help you and your new family member.  This list is in no particular order.

Litter Supplies
Top Entry Litter Box

By the time that your kitten goes home with you, they're using a top entry litter box.  The genius behind the simple top entry design is that when jumping out of the box, most of the litter falls off their paws.  Some will deposit on the lid, which is easily knocked back into the box when it's opened to be scooped.
Pan Liners

Depending on your cat and how often you scoop the box, pan liners can be a big help or a hassle.  If you scoop frequently then the plastic liners can get in the way.  If your cat is a prolific digger, which isn't common, the liner may get damaged.  However, if you're looking for ease of disposal, using liners is hard to beat.  They're great if you're going to be out of town for a few days and want a quick and easy litter change when you get back.
Scoop

There are some fancy and expensive scoops on the market.  Some of the pricy ones are metal.  We've seen some coated with Teflon.  We prefer to keep it simple with this plastic scoop.  It's large so it gets the job done quickly.  And it's inexpensive - when it gets too dirty, just replace it instead of scrubbing out an expensive metal scoop.  This plastic scoop is more than sturdy enough to tackle the job.
Litter

Here's where it gets controversial.  There are many strong opinions about which cat litter to use.  A quick search of the topic will yield ample results.  We won't deep dive into the pros and cons of each but we will just say that this is the litter that we use.  Litter is very heavy and expensive to ship.  You may find a better price at your local pet or grocery store.

Scratching Centers
Scratching Post

The sky is the limit when it comes to scratching posts.  Some people prefer multiple small scratching posts at various locations throughout the house.  Others prefer elaborate multi-level cat trees with scratching posts, hanging and spring-mounted toys and sleeping nooks.  At the very least, we recommend having some scratching posts around for your cat.  Why do we use this one?  It's large enough for an adult cat, it's made using natural fiber sisal rope and the lack of carpet/fabric at the base makes it easy to keep clean.  Providing an appropriate outlet for a cat's natural scratching tendencies helps to focus that behavior on the scratching post and away from other areas.
Scratch Guards

We don't typically need scratch guards but they can be helpful if your cat adores scratching a particular spot and you disagree with their choices.

Nutrition
Kitten Food - Purina ONE

Nutrition is another hot button issue today and will likely become more so as people become more knowledgeable about their pet's diet.  In general, we feed a diet of dry kibble where at least the first two ingredients are an identifiable quality protein source.  We typically mix several brands of foods together to ensure a consistent and high quality source of protein and nutrients for our cats and kittens.  You will want to choose a single brand where high quality protein sources are at the top of the ingredients list.  We use Purina ONE kitten food.  This product is available in several sizes.  To provide the freshest food possible, we recommend buying smaller bags of food more frequently.  Yes, that method is more expensive.  But it's fresher - and that's precisely why it's worth it.
Kitten Food - IAMS Proactive Health

IAMS makes quality kitten food; we use IAMS Proactive Health to feed your kitten.  The first two ingredients are a quality source of protein and the food contains many important vitamins, minerals and nutrients that support growth and development.  The other important point to note is taste.  We've tested a ton of premium brands; in our opinion, price is not a barrier when it comes to ensuring strong and healthy cats.  But many of the cats and kittens shy way from eating some of the most expensive brands.  The food has to be healthy but it has to taste good too.  That said, we try new premium brands all of the time and include them in the mix that we feed.  You should not shy away from doing the same.
Adult Food - Purina ONE True Instinct Grain Free High Protein Formula

This brand is available in several flavors.  Our cats enjoy all of them and thrive on these high protein foods.
Adult Food - Wellness Complete Health Natural Grain Free Dry Cat Food

Along with Purina and IAMS, we mix in other quality brands like Wellness.  There are more quality pet food brands then ever before.  Look for food with meat in the first few ingredients.  Ignore specialty ingredients - like food that feature blueberries or sweet potatoes.  Cats are obligate carnivores.  They need a high protein diet to thrive. Feeding cats a plant-based diet makes as much sense as feeding cows a meat-based diet.  Their digestive system has not evolved to handle that and they won't thrive on it.
Wet Food - IAMS Perfect Portions

First and foremost: wet food should be viewed as a treat, not a meal.  This is one of the top issues that we field from first-time kitten parents.  Please feed wet food sparingly.  These IAMS Perfect Portions packs are great for their small size and ease of use.  Nobody really wants to store an opened can of cat food in the fridge.

Wet Food - Purina ONE True Instinct High Protein Wet Cat Food

Quality ingredients and your kitten loves it.  Buying a package with multiple flavors helps add some variety to your cat's diet.

Grooming
FURminator

This is our go-to tool for regularly removing loose fur from the top and undercoat of our adult cats.  The FURminator tool will help reduce shedding, loose cat hair around your home and hair balls.  Consistent routine maintenance goes a long way in maintaining your cat's long, rich coat.
GoPets Dematting Rake

Use this dematting rake to remove loose fur, especially close to the skin.  If your cat's coat has gotten a little wild during shedding season or you're taming some knots, this is a great tool to use.  It's gentler than the FURminator but definitely gets the job done.
JW Pet Company GripSoft Cat Comb

The GripSoft cat comb is our go-to comb for general maintenance.  And we use this comb on your kitten while they're being raised in our home.  This is our primary tool when it's not shedding season.  It's important to keep your cat used to regular combing.  You don't want your cat to associate every grooming session with a deep removal/maintenance experience.
JW Pet GripSoft Deluxe Pet Nail Clipper

There are a lot of fine nail clippers out there but we prefer this pair from JW.  They're a good size for the hand, spring loaded and have soft grips.  Another bonus is that they work well for left-handed and right-handed people.  They're inexpensive and easy to use.
